Prior to hitting the road in pursuit of a music career, this musician had what a lot of Americans sorely need: a union factory job, house, car and network of friends and family in Clarks Mills, Penn.  He gave it all up to pursue a deeper longing for music.  Now based in Austin, Texas, Hornyak has toured solo for the past few years and his music -- dubbed "Texas country" and "Austin rock" by critics -- reflects his influences.  That list includes John Prine, The Rolling Stones, Jane's Addiction, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bob Dylan and Tom Petty.  Given his soft, folksy voice, he reminds me more of Prine than Jane's Addiction.  However, just when you think you're in for a long, slow set of rural storytelling, he rocks you with a song such as "So Let Down," and you swear it's Eddie Vedder with a country-tinged voice.  The Crow Killers, an Americana band from Wausau featuring Sam Staples on vocals, opens the show at Malarkey's.  Hornyak also plays the Four Stools Short on Friday, in Wisconsin Rapids.  That show, like the one at Malarkey's Pub, begins at 9:30 pm.  The Plover show begins at 8pm.
